Poker has always had a certain appeal for many—both players and non-players. Today, we take a closer look at the power that poker seems to hold through the years. Rotten Gods is comprised of individuals who hold poker quite near and dear to our hearts. We got around to asking each other what attracted us to the game to begin with.
It was an interesting exercise that truly opened our eyes to the power to poker. Here are a few of the answers that we heard:
“Poker is a family tradition.”
One of our writers says that poker runs through her family. There is no doubt that poker has quite an age on it. While historians cannot really determine when the exact start of the game is there are those that say that it started from something as early as the 18th century.
With such an age to the game, it is not that hard to imagine that it would part of a family’s tradition. Our writer says that they have a family established tournament which helps keep the tradition alive and well. One of the things that give poker its power is the deeply entrenched roots some people have with the game.
“You never play the same poker game twice.”
One of the fun things about poker is that even if you play with the same people, you will end up with different hands and different approaches. As such, you rarely end up playing the exact same game twice. There is a saying that you never step into the same river twice.
This is because of the water that is in a constant state of flow. The same concept applies to poker with the different people that you can play the game with.
You can try to learn all the different hands or ways to bluff people but you cannot be assured of the end result. This is why it remains to be intriguing to many. There is always something about poker that keeps players on their toes.
“It’s a fun way to stay sharp!”
This is something that one of our elder writers/poker enthusiasts replied. He explains that poker requires complete attention in order to stay on top of the cards that have been tossed and who bluffed who.
When you are past a certain age, most people expect you to just lay back and let your wits deteriorate. Not our guy though! He uses poker to keep his critical thinking up and running—as well as his memory and wits.
In conclusion, poker has an allure that has not waned or weakened through the years. In fact, with the adaptation to modern technology, even more are falling for the game. Poker is truly going to endure and capture more hearts as the years go by. If our writers and what they have to say is anything to go by, poker has a strange power that affects people in a truly positive way. What power does poker have in your life?
